Organizations combine transplant-focused diagnostics, advanced imaging and AI-assisted workflow expertise to help organ recovery and transplant teams access objective, standardized information from existing medical imaging
CompuMed, a leader in transplant-focused remote diagnostics and donor data management, and 3DR Labs, the nation’s largest and most trusted provider of 3D medical image post-processing, today announced a strengthened strategic partnership focused on helping organ donation and transplant professionals access more meaningful insights from existing medical imaging.
The collaboration builds on a relationship first established in 2022 and reflects a shared commitment to helping organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and transplant centers make faster, more informed decisions using information already contained within donor imaging studies.
For years, donor evaluation has relied heavily on clinical indicators and proxies such as age, height, weight and body mass index. While valuable, those measures provide only part of the picture. Existing donor CT imaging often contains additional information that can help characterize organ quality and transplant suitability, but that information has not traditionally been accessible to OPOs and transplant teams through donor hospitals within the timeframes required for organ offer and acceptance decisions.
CompuMed identified the opportunity to change that. Through the collaboration, 3DR Labs provides the advanced imaging expertise, specialty post‑processing, AI‑assisted workflows, and stat‑ready operational infrastructure required to extract clinically meaningful information from donor imaging, while CompuMed ensures these capabilities are delivered to OPOs and transplant centers within transplant‑focused workflows where timing is critical.
“Everything we do at CompuMed is focused on driving out surprise and regret for transplant teams,”
said Lee Keddie, CEO of CompuMed. “Surprise when they accept a donor organ that doesn’t turn out to be what they expected and regret when they decline an organ and later learn they missed an opportunity. We’ve long believed that donor imaging contains valuable information that can help reduce both. Through our strategic partnership with 3DR Labs, we’re helping transplant teams access more of the information they actually want so they can make decisions faster and with greater confidence.”
Together, the organizations are helping transplant professionals move beyond generalized proxies and access objective information derived directly from donor imaging studies already being performed as part of routine donor evaluation. This includes 3D volumetric analysis, which can provide more precise measurements of donor organs than traditional estimation methods.
By transforming existing imaging into objective, standardized information, the organizations aim to help OPOs and transplant centers make faster, more confident decisions without adding additional testing or delaying the donation process.
said Mike Jackman, CEO of 3DR Labs. “Our role has been to build the specialized imaging workflows, expert teams, and operational infrastructure required to make these insights available reliably, at scale, and in a way that aligns with the urgency of transplant medicine. We’re proud to serve as a strategic imaging partner to CompuMed in helping bring these capabilities to OPOs and transplant centers across the country.”
While the organizations’ joint efforts have already demonstrated the value of advanced imaging in donation and transplantation, both believe the greatest opportunities still lie ahead. They also share a common belief that any meaningful innovation will require both advanced technology and experienced professionals.
Leaders from CompuMed and 3DR Labs agree that artificial intelligence is most powerful when paired with human expertise and judgment.
“We often describe our approach as AI plus HI – artificial intelligence combined with human intelligence,” said Dr. Robert Falk, founder and chief medical officer of 3DR Labs. “AI can accelerate analysis and uncover opportunities within complex imaging data, but experienced specialists remain essential to ensuring quality and trust. That combination of technology and human expertise is extremely important to this partnership as we continue delivering value to the organ donation and transplantation community.”
